Lyscilla meets Madyne, part 2!
      by Callista Skip

From Triskelion's Reign, by Callista Skip

The pair strolled over the main bridge that separated the Upper from the Lower, and walked along the wide road that split the Warehouse District from the rest of the Lower. Lyscilla hadn't been in the area since she had gained access to the House District, and the comparison was jarring. Across the river, the buildings were built with marble and pale stone - the Lower was all concrete and gravel. Though it was cleaned just as often as the Upper, and by the same crews, the simple change in color made Lyscilla want to take a bath as soon as she got back to House Goan.

Lyscilla shook her head, regaining her focus. She noted that Madyne's mouth had tightened during her pause. "I was given chances so many of Di'Ahla's youth won't get. I was able to prove my worth through sheer force of ability and desire - not ride piggyback on my family's nonexistent status."

Madyne nodded at that, and some of the starch went out of her shoulders as she waved at a tight knot of young adults walking down the street across from them. The feline said, "The Guild sends us to the trade schools, teaches the brightest of us how to become the best at what we're allowed to do. Nothing more."

"And that's exactly what I'll change," Lyscilla said, allowing some steel into her voice. "This whole system needs to be changed from the inside out; you can't do it from the Slums, no matter how many of you there are. The Guilds sit behind walls of iron and history, only regulated by those who-"

"-created it in the first place," Madyne cut her off. The feline grabbed Lyscilla's hand, nodding fiercely. "You're right, of course. We are only a voice. We need a fist."

"I have a practiced fist." Lyscilla smiled with all of her teeth. "You are interested in my help, then? We agree on this plan of action?" Lyscilla felt that her body was coiled like a spring, waiting for Madyne's answer.

Madyne's ears were twitching, rotating to catch the sounds of her city, her blue eyes closed. She was swaying back and forth softly, and Lyscilla understood the powerful woman needed to weigh her options.

"You will amaze those stoic bastards." Lyscilla said.

Madyne nodded and opened her eyes then, and Lyscilla knew she had spoken correctly.

The way of change can be a destructive thing when one is not prepared. But just because change causes ill effects, doesn't mean other will prosper from change itself.
